6 Medical Mistakes That Affect Kids and How to Avoid Them

Mistakes affect children more seriously than adults. Protect your child from these errors.

  1. Medication. This is by far the most common medical mistake in children. Be sure they are taking the correct medication, in the right amount for their weight and at the right time. Double-check with the doctor and the pharmacist that everything is correct before giving any drugs to your child.
  2. In the hospital. Most medical mistakes happenin the hospital. If your child is hospitalized, someone needs to be with him as his advocate at all times. Children often can’t describe a symptom or understand the directions they are given. Never leave them alone.
  3. Allergies. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about any known or possible allergies or adverse reactions your child may have had to medications, food, or other substances.
  4. Surgical errors. Children have special surgical needs. If you have a choice, choose a doctor and a facility where many of the same pediatric procedures have been performed. Experience is essential for a good outcome.
  5. Emergency room (1). Do not use the ER for your child’s routine medical treatment. The ER doctors do not know your child’s medical history, possibly leading to medical mistakes. Your child must have a primary care doctor.
  6. Emergency room (2). Before an emergencyarises, make sure you know which facility in your area is equipped to handle the needs of a child. In a major emergency always call 9-1-1. The EMTs are experts in knowing which facilities can handle your needs.
