Not Just a Spoonful of Sugar
- Give medicine only when it’s necessary. This will teach them to use medication only when they need it.
- Explain why they have to take it, how it will make them feel better, and how they will feel if they don’t.
- Let them be in charge. Ask them to pick out a spoon or decide where they want to take the medicine. After checking the label (or asking your doctor), let them pick what to drink after taking the medicine
- Make it taste better. Ask your doctor if you can dip the spoon in chocolate syrup first. This will mask the taste of the medicine.
- Don’t get into a physical struggle. It sets up a bad pattern.
- Give them an out. Instead of issuing a punishment, let them choose to walk away and come back when they’re calm and ready
- Teach them to swallow pills when they reach school age. It will make things easier on everyone.
